The last great street cinema

The São Luiz is one of the last street cinemas in Brazil and is recognised as the hall with the richest artistic and architectural conception in Recife. The difference from a shopping-centre screen is not only size: here a screening remains a public event in urban space rather than a service inside a commercial complex. It opened on 6 September 1952, built by the Severiano Ribeiro group, and stands on the bank of the Capibaribe at the head of the Duarte Coelho bridge, one of the busiest points of the centre. In 2008 the building was listed as a historic monument by the state government, which through Fundarpe returned the revitalised hall to the public, taking on the task of preserving and spreading the art of cinema. In July 2022 it closed for a new cooling system, roof leak repairs and electrical resizing. After the torrential rains of February 2023 it had to be fully closed for safety. Then came recovery of the rainwater drainage, restoration of the decorated plaster ceiling, purchase of projection and sound equipment and digitisation of films from the collection. It reopened to the general public in January 2026. The essential thing is the hall: a large volume, a formal foyer and a decorated plaster ceiling whose recovery required dedicated restoration work. Notice the scale of the screen and the arrangement of the balcony when it is open, because the geometry was designed for mass exhibition rather than the reduced format of multiplexes. Remember the other side as well: while the main street cinema stays closed, its audience migrates to shopping centres and the habit of watching films in the centre weakens. Go to a screening. Seeing the building without a projection makes little sense, because the meaning of the place lies in how it works with a full house. Confirm the programme and start time in advance, since the schedule changes and some sessions belong to festivals and premieres. Arrive twenty to thirty minutes early to take in the foyer and the ceiling and to choose a good seat. If you are in the city briefly, look for local films, because this is where Pernambuco cinema meets its audience, and such a session gives more than an international premiere. From there you can cross the river and climb to Praça da República for the Teatro de Santa Isabel, then descend into old Recife for the Apolo and the Hermilo. If you prefer open air to auditoriums, follow Rua da Aurora towards the bridges, because the night view of the river with lit façades is among the best urban images in the city.
