Eighty-seven works facing the old city

The park opened in 2000, at the turn of the millennium, within the project I Saw the World… It Began in Recife. The same project produced Cícero Dias's compass rose on the floor of Marco Zero, so the two banks were conceived as one composition.

Port, water and the crossing

The park lies within the Port of Recife area, facing Marco Zero, and access is usually by water, with catamarans and the crossing leaving from the square. The trip across the estuary is part of the visit.

Around it is a working port zone rather than a tourist street, which gives the place its particular character, art beside terminals and machinery. Walking options are few, so the crossing remains the main route.

On the Marco Zero side the whole old-Recife route continues, so the park fits well into the same day.

Consider that the crossing depends on weather and water conditions, with trips cancelled in strong wind, so keep an alternative plan in the rainy season.

Open-air art and the cost of care

The central issue here is material rather than ideological: an open-air site by the sea means permanent struggle with the climate. Three years of restoration show what it costs a city to display art in the open beside salt water.

The second question is access, because the park is separated from the city by water and reaching it requires a crossing, so real attendance depends on schedules and fares.

The third is coexistence with the port, since a cultural function exists inside an active industrial area and the balance between them rests on agreements.

Plan around access hours: according to official information the park receives visitors from Tuesday to Friday during daytime hours, and that should be confirmed before you set out, because arrangements can change.

The practical scheme is to start at Marco Zero, cross, walk the park in forty to sixty minutes and return. Bring water and sun protection, since there is little shade and the ground heats up.

The best moments are early morning and late afternoon, when the light is softer. For photography it also pays, because midday sun flattens the volumes you came to see.

With children allow less time, because an open site in the sun tires quickly and forty minutes is usually enough to walk everything without rushing.

Getting there and access

The park sits in the Port of Recife area, facing Marco Zero. The main route is by water from the square; confirm crossing times, conditions and fares in advance, since they depend on the operator and the season.

The ground is flat and open, which usually eases movement, but boarding and landing at the quay is a separate matter for visitors with reduced mobility and should be checked beforehand.

There is little shade, almost no shelter from rain and a strong breeze off the water, so dress accordingly and do not plan long pauses without water.

Confirm where the crossing docks, since boarding points at Marco Zero shift with events on the square and with water conditions.

Where to go next

Back at Marco Zero, continue through old Recife, because Paço do Frevo, Torre Malakoff, the synagogue and Cais do Sertão are a short walk away.

And to close the day, return to the square in late afternoon, when the column on the far bank reads best and the route comes full circle.

Remember that the column is clearly visible from the square: if the crossing is not running, part of the experience still works from the bank.
